Condo Envy
By Pat Kennedy on Jun 13, 2007 in Real Estate
Last November, I posted "When Sparks Fly" about the electrical fire at my friend, Jean Kornfeld’s beautiful home that sits just behind my own.
Since then, her insurance company has rented temporary digs for her to live in while her house is being rebuilt. It happens to be a very cool 2-bedroom, 2 bath with a den condo on the 1400 block of Church Street. God! It even has parking. And every time we get together and meet at her place, I feel the urge to move downtown.
If we are dining in, she can run over to Whole Foods (a block away) for something delicious. Or, if we decide to eat out, there are dozens of restaurants from every continent except Antarctica that are no more than a five minute walk from her condo.
Get togethers with Jean are not the only ones that create little pangs of condo envy.
My friend, Annie, moved from a big old house to my favorite building at 2500 Q, right on the cusp of Georgetown and Dupont Circle. She even has a huge terrace where her friends will have a fabulous view of the fire works this 4th of July.
Then there are all of the places I am previewing for my clients. I saw one at Chase Point, and while my clients were trying to decide what they wanted to do, I was mentally moving in my own grand piano, oriental rugs and twelve foot long bookcases.
But wait!
I already live very close to down town.
And my current significant other is good dog Willie, the labradoodle puppie who would greatly prefer his nice fenced-in back yard and walks in Rock Creek Park to humping legs on a crowded elevator on his way to a quick spin around Logan Circle.
And when I throw my annual Christmas party, would my friends decline my invitation because parking would be such a hassle? And would my new downstairs neighbors call the police if we got even a little bit rowdy?
And if I want to play my piccolo or had some buddies over to play chamber music, would I get hate notes from the poor folks who had to suffer through the Christmas party noise, and Willie’s barking and humping.
I’m wondering if some of this isn’t inspired by impending bathroom renovations. Until they’re done, I will be living mostly in my lovely home’s basement apartment - with Willie! I have to keep him away from all of the lead paint dust.
Once the contractors are finished working their magic, maybe my condo fantasies will recede - especially when I’m soaking in the new Jacuzzi.

Hey, sometime in the distant future, you could be a snow bird and have the best of both worlds, Bahama (or someplace else warm)and the big city in the summer. Or maybe Wn. DC would be better in the winter than the summer?
