Back to the 60′s

Today, for the first time in many, many years, I participated in a demonstration.  God, it was exhilarating!

A group of about 60 agents from WC & AN Miller Realtors marched on the company’s headquarters this morning to show our support for Michael Seay, the head of the real estate division.  His future with Miller, a local, family-owned company, was at the top of the agenda for a meeting of the stockholders and board members of the family owned organization. And we wanted to make our voices heard by the company owners.  If they want to play “Family Feud” at his expense, the agents won’t stand for it.

First, we assembled in the parking lot, and we sent up a note that we wanted the shareholders to know we were out there to support Michael.  Our eyes were focused on the blinds drawn over the windows of the meeting rooms waiting for the meeting participants to look out the windows and wave or somehow acknowledge us.  Nothing happened.

Now, the Miller agent demographic includes a number of folks who grew up in the 60’s, and many of us did our share of peace marches and occupying college administration buildings.  So after 20 or so minutes, the buzz started, “Let’s crash the Board meeting!”  So this unruly mob of high-end real estate agents, wearing their Ferragamo shoes and carrying Chanel handbags marched into the building, ascended the stairs, and found the glass doors locked and a nervous young receptionist on the other side gaping at us.

It was a totally peaceful demonstration.  We didn’t knock down the doors and occupy the CEO’s office.  Come to think about it, we didn’t even chant!  God, what wimps!  One of the family members had met with us before the meeting, and she arranged for two Realtor representatives to address the group, so we are at least certain that the message was delivered.

So, the meeting’s over, and now we are waiting to hear if the message was heard.  I, for one, certainly hope so.
